Sidney
Sidney, oil on canvas
Sidney, however, only had an eighth grade education. As he would tell it, Sidney was made to go to work in the garment industry to help support the family while the other brothers went off to school. Of course there were some extenuating circumstances. Sidney loved to gamble (poker and the horses) and was decidedly not yeshiva material. On the other hand, who knows what happens when family expectations place you at the bottom of the pile.
The main point of all this, however, is that despite these circumstances Sidney was very proud of his sense of humor. It was said that when Sidney was present at the dinner table, nobody would dare take a sip of soup. Such was the notoriety enjoyed by my father. The problem was that the conversation was usually in Yiddish and as a young child I could never understand the jokes.

Text from right: QUESTION: With the varied experience you've had, what do you think the reason is for girls foolishly applying lipstick just before the boy-friend takes them home from a date? Sgt. Sidney Gross, Squadron O, Buffalo, N.Y., "It sure beats the hell outa me! Why, before I got married I used to be the laundryman's prayer with all my deeply lipsticked hankies! Maybe gals think they look prettier to a guy when they put the paint on. As far as I am concerned, I put the lights out and close my eyes!" |
