Syllabus: "Landscape Painting in the Italian (Classical and Contemporary) Tradition"

Description

This is a 3-day intensive hands-on plein-air landscape painting workshop for painters at any level. The "conceptual" in landscape painting will be emphasized, namely the importance of ideas, especially grand teoria (grand theory) in landscape painting from Reynolds and Constable which made its way to Engand via Italy and the ideas of Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano, and the Italian impressionists (the I Macchiaioli). Students will have the opprotunity to master each of the three "legs" of the Italian tradition: Drawing: disegno ; Form: forma and composition: composizione; Observation: osservazione. With a small class size of ten maximum students will get one on one instruction in the Italian methods and techniques of landscape paintings as they attempt to apply the ideas learned.

Day 1 : Drawing: disegno

Introduction to grand teoria (grand theory) in landscape painting from Tiziano & Leonardo to Signorini & the I Macchiaioli. The importance of color, chiraroscuro, & composition and subordinazione delle parti al tutto (the "subordination of the parts to the whole"). Students will learn gesture, contour, and perspective drawing for landscape. Starting with how to hold drawing materials correctly, students will learn how to avoid inaccuracies, use structural and non-structural lines, make mass gesture drawings, use triangulation, envelopes, and comparative measurement. Students will be able to use different types of perspective, draw curves, use baseline and ground contours, and avoid eye movement problems, use shape arrangements and counterpoint.

Day 2 Form: forma and composition: composizione

Students will learn how to make a 2-value statement in dark and light (la macchia). Students learn how to select a viewpoint for the painting, how to use geometric solids to render complex forms, how to create forms going from general to specific, how to simplify complex forms, how to observe and represent light planes, half-tones, highlights, plane edges, shadow planes, reflected light, and cast shadows. Students will be able to create unequal space divisions and use the golden section and rebatement of the rectangle, as well as how to judge a strong vs. weak macchia structure. Students will use negative space in composition, utilize baseline and ground contours, overlapping forms, and use the principle of thirds, avoid dead areas in the center of a composition, and use of primary and secondary focal points.

Day 3: Observation: osservazione

Students will learn how to observe nature in terms of hue shifts in both light and shade. Students will practice matching light and shade relationships on high and low saturated objects, to correctly paint half-tone colors, and to selectively render light and shade as needed. Student will learn to identify values accurately, create evenly spaced values, flatten values, explore alternative value patterns through macchia development, and continue to use limited value studies. Students will study how to convey depth through use of foreground, middle ground, and distant ground zones, how to create perspective through use of diminished sizes in the distance, use baselines and receding baselines, overlapping forms, and dark accents.
