A Landscape Painting Workshop with JERRY ROSS

'Plein Air Painting with the Macchia (Spot) Method'

recent "Brownsville paintings" by Jerry Ross

"The painting style I have adapted to my needs is something I call "verismo Americano" (American verismo) which can be translated as American realism, but this is not your garden variety of realism, rather it is realism informed by an Italian design discipline known as "Macchia ('Spot')" or pattern-making that emphasizes a strong visual impact or "effect." In addition, "paesaggi" or "landscapes" are given both a poetic and social aspect reflecting by placing figures into the landscape. The landscapes of the "I Macchiaioli" school of 19th Century Tuscany often included people (figures), buildings (architecture), and other objects (animals, farm implements, etc). This workshop will be taught in oils and watercolor, although participants can use any medium they like. The emphasis will be on learning the macchia technique and producing plein air paintings with impact and beauty. "
